General features on KaiOS

General features on KaiOS

The available functionalities vary per device. Generally speaking, KaiOS supports features such as voice calls, text messages, contacts, camera, calendar, music, clock, and email. It’s up to manufacturers to decide which of them to implement.  

You can find information about specific devices on this page. To learn more about the features available on a particular device, please check the device manufacturer’s website. 

Edit photos

You can use the photo editor to rotate, crop, apply filters to, and adjust the brightness, contrast, and exposure of photos.

Access and use the photo editor

  1. Open the Gallery and select the photo you want to edit.
  2. Go to Options (bottom right corner) and select Edit.
  3. Choose how you want to edit.
  4. Press Save.

The new version of the photo will be saved to the Gallery. The original photo will not be deleted.

Group text messages

You can add multiple recipients to one same text message. You will still be sending individual text messages; the advantage is that you will only type the content of the text message once. Recipients can respond to your text individually.

Third-party communication apps such as WhatsApp support group chat.

Open file attachments

You can open and read email attachments in PDF, JPEG, PNG, and other formats. To open a specific type of file, you may need to download a reader app from the KaiStore. To find reader apps, check the Utilities tab.

Video calls

Important: KaiOS supports video calls on 4G mobile phones. To make video calls on 3G mobile phones, download a third-party app.

KaiOS supports video calls on 4G mobile phones, but available functionalities can vary per device. You can find information about specific devices on this page. To learn more about the features available on a particular device, please check your device manual or contact the device manufacturer.

Copy and paste

KaiOS does not currently support copy and paste. We are always improving the OS, so this feature may become available in the future.

Check and update your apps in KaiStore

Updating your apps in KaiStore to make sure you have the latest features and the best performance with improved security and stability.

To download the latest version of an app, you must:

  1. Be connected to wifi or mobile data
  2. Have a valid and correctly inserted SIM card

  1. Go to KaiStore > Update
  2. Press to select the app you want to update
  3. Press update

KaiOS 3.0 is only available on select KaiOS devices. Some newly released KaiOS devices in North America will ship with KaiOS 3.0 preloaded. 

You will get notifications when updates are available for you. Alternatively, you can regularly check the Software Update in Settings to see if the latest update is available for your device.  

Download updates: 

  1. Go to Settings > Device > Device Information > Software > Software Update. 
  1. Press to select and download the update (if available). 

Important: Older devices running KaiOS 2.5.4 or lower can’t run the new KaiOS 3.0 version.

The latest version of KaiOS is 3.0, released in September 2021. It is a complete upgrade since KaiOS 2.5, packing the latest Mozilla Gecko engine (version 84) and comes with the latest chipset Board Support Package & Linux kernel.

Apps on KaiOS 3.0

Apps running on KaiOS 3.0 are required to be optimized for the new platform, so app developers would need to make changes to their existing apps on KaiOS 2.5 to adapt to the platform changes. 

You’ll find some existing apps on KaiOS 2.5 already migrated to the KaiStore 3.0 platform as soon as you unbox your new device with 3.0 preloaded. Stay tuned as there’ll be more to come.
